In the year 1221 St Osyth’s priory, the owner of Costed manor was licenced to plant a church in Brentwood, dedicated to St. Thomas Becket.

In 1835, a new chapel was built of stock brick to the design of James Savage better known for his important Commissioner’s Gothic church of St Luke, Chelsea.

Between 1881 and 1883, the current church was built.
